SIMS Summer Census 2022 guidance
As part of our SIMS support for schools, here’s our update on the latest guidance for the SIMS.net Summer Term 2022 School Census.
Essential dates this year
- Census date 19/05/2022
- Attendance collected from 01/01/2022 to 17/04/2022
- Exclusions collected from 01/08/2021 to 17/04/2022
- Free School Meal Eligibility collected from 21/01/2022 to 19/05/2022
- Alternative Provision Placements collected from 21/01/2022 to 19/05/2022
- Funding and Monitoring collected from 01/08/2021 to 19/05/2022
- Learner Support collected from 01/08/2021 to 19/05/2022
Changes to the School Census Summer Return include the following:
Funding and monitoring
A total hours for the whole of the academic year column has been added to help schools to take account of any extra hours of tuition that could be provided in the period after the autumn census reference date and the end of the academic year. This new column can be helpful when entering the totals required for the DfE's end of year 'clawback' return.
You might notice SIMS has a new Census Communication Box, but all future versions of school census and school workforce census will include this box.

Newsfeed: This opens the most recent version of the School Census Summer 2022 newsfeed

Errors & Resolutions: This opens the most recent version of the Statutory Returns Errors and Solutions newsfeed.

Handbooks: This opens the most recent version of the Returns Manager page of the SIMS Documentation Centre.

DfE Guidance: This opens the 'Complete the school census' page of GOV.UK.

Support Unit: This will be displayed if School Business Services have completed your SIMS upgrades.

Message: The message text will be blank until the first fileset is imported or the first consolidated database patch is applied, but each fileset and consolidated database patch can provide an appropriate message. For example, the import of a fileset may recommend a minimum consolidated database patch.
